If you want to know the cause of the obesity epidemic that is sweeping the globe then you have to look no further than people making unhealthy food choices, and then eating far too much of that food. In developed countries then people don’t really have to worry about where they can get food from, they can get food from pretty much anywhere so it isn’t appreciated when they do get it. Instead they are used to having big portions and like to eat until they feel stuffed, which is not the point of eating. Of course some of the diets have cottoned onto the fact we like to eat which is why you see diets like Cheat Your Way Thin which use promises of eating pizza and ice cream while you diet to lure you in and buy it.

Of course the easiest way to lose weight is just to cut down the amount you are eating, and below are two tips to help you do just that:

Throw away some of your meal: I know people hate to waste food which is why we end up eating so much half the time, but at first you are not going to want to cut down your portion sizes, so to get round that just throw some of it away. It is tricky to say how much you need to waste from each meal as some people will load their plate up more than others, but start with about 25% of your meal and chuck it straight in the bin.

Most of us will eat all the food on our plate, even if it is far too much for us, so by getting rid of a portion of food before we start eating then we still get the satisfaction of eating everything on our plate, but we eat 25% fewer calories in the process. Hopefully after a few meals you will realize that even though you are throwing away a huge chunk of your meal then you are still not hungry afterwards, then you can start to cut down how much you put on your plate so you don’t have to throw any away.

Only ever go shopping on a full stomach: This is something that most people would never consider, but if you go grocery shopping when you are hungry then suddenly it seems like a good idea to buy a lot more food than you need, and things which are a lot more tasty but less healthy. If you wait until you are full after a meal before you go then you will make much better decisions and end up buying a lot less food. Then you will have a lot less food hanging around to be eaten, and you’ll be saving money at the same time too.

Recently the weight loss market has had a deluge of new diets and it is becoming increasing more difficult to search through them all and filter the good from the bad. Of course they all say they are best as well, that they can help you to lose the most weight in the least amount of time, and they give you testimonials as proof of that, but how do you know who you can trust? Checking forums is also a good idea as if they have an active community then they will usually have reviewed just about every diet out there and they are not shy about what feedback they give either so don’t expect anything to be sugarcoated.

That should allow you quickly create a shortlist of diets you want to try that sound good, and allow you to quickly sidestep any that are obviously a waste of time and money.

Get some help from family and friends: The great thing about finding reviews online is the sheer number you can find within minutes, the downside though is you have no idea which of them you can actually trust. Which is why you should also ask around your family and friends to see what diets they have experience with, and what their feedback on them is. Ok they are not going to have experience with very many so you are only going to be able to get feedback on a few diets, but at least you know they did actually try the diet and you know they are telling the truth when they give feedback.

Also if you find somebody who is still dieting then you can team up with them on the same diet and be there to encourage and motivate each other and share tips and tricks you pick up, so you both get the most out of it.

Check the celebrity gossip magazines: This is probably a controversial choice that most people would disagree with, but I think looking at what diets celebrities are using is a good idea. If you think about then these are people with access to resources we can only dream of. They can hire the best personal trainers, have full time cooks to make them whatever meals they want etc, and so if they are choosing to follow a diet then it must be for a good reason. Of course you need to be careful about celebrities who actually promote particular diets, their choice is going to be biased, but keep an eye out for what the others are using when you read the latest news.

If your blood pressure is 140/90 or higher, you need to get it down! The good news is that many of the steps you can take are painless, and some are downright enjoyable.

To complete this How-To you will need:

Potassium-rich foods
Red wine
A pedometer
Dark chocolate
A pet
Spirituality

Step 1: Eat less sodium and salt

Consume less sodium, which contributes to hypertension. It’s not enough to just put away the saltshaker — check food labels as well. Many prepared foods, like canned soup and frozen meals, are loaded with sodium.

Step 2: Eat potassium-rich foods

Eat more baked potatoes — with the skin — plus other potassium-rich foods like acorn squash, bananas, orange juice, and halibut. Dozens of studies prove that a potassium-rich diet helps combat the blood pressure-raising damage of a high sodium diet.

Step 3: Drink red wine

Drink one glass of red wine every day, but limit yourself to just one glass.

Step 4: Lose weight

Lose weight if you need to. Obesity has been linked to hypertension. Track your steps with a pedometer. People who use them walk up to 2,000 steps more, which can help them reduce their weight and their blood pressure.

Step 5: Get a pet

Get a pet. Not only does having one lower blood pressure, petting them has been shown to increase levels of the feel-good hormones dopamine and serotonin in their owners.

Step 6: Eat chocolate

Eat some chocolate every day. The trick is to keep the portion small — say, bite-size — and make sure you’re munching dark chocolate made mostly from cocoa solids. It should taste a little bitter.

Step 7: Become a hugger

Become more touchy-feely. Research indicates that people who hug and hold hands are calmer.

Step 8: Start praying

Start praying. One study found that people who attend weekly religious services have lower blood pressure than those who don’t attend at all.
