I’m on a low fat diet. Is honey Ok in small amounts?
I have been on my new healthy eating plan (because i’m overweight) for a couple of weeks now, combined with exercise, but it’s getting near ‘that time of the month’ and im really craving sweet things. I was thinking maybe i could have some honey on wholemeal toast to help my sweet cravings without caving into chocolate.
Would this do any damage to my diet?
There is no fat in honey so if you are just worried about the fat than no. But do realize that honey is very high in carbohydrates and calories. And that for your waistline, it’s just as bad as sugar.

Fat doesn’t make you fat, but low fat & high carbs sure will. Carbs create cravings for more carbs & unbalance other hormones.

Honey is effectively pure carbohydrate, its about 300 calories per 100gms, so use it very sparingly.

If you are on a low fat diet and are eating low fat products then you are already eating a high sugar diet. It is without doubt the worst way to lose weight and only encourages your body to burn lean tissue which means as soon as you stop being so disciplined your weight will rocket back up. Since people started following low fat diets the incidence of obesity hasd risen exponentially. So the answer is no, get over sugar, its what your body makes fat from, Eating fat in healthy quantities (and that includes cholesterol and saturated fats) does not provoke an insulin response in your body. Eating sugar, including honey (and especially if its in combination with lots of low fat products), can raise the level of blood sugar (too much blood sugar can kill you), so that your body then releases insulin to mop up the excess sugar – your body then lays down the excess as fat ultimately. ONce an insulin response has been provoked often your body will mop up too much sugar leaving you feeling tired and craving sugar so you go through the whole cycle again. Your craving for chocolate is probably due to low blood sugar but the best way to stabilise blood sugar is to eat whole foods which release energy slowly and therefore do not provoke the release of insulin, The whole low fat diet thing came from a tiny study (only 200 people) conducted in Scandinavia during the seventies. It was never repeated and nobody has ever checked the results. Low fat has been hijacked as a marketing ploy to get you eating products you perceive to be healthy but which are packed with cheap ingredients and loads of sugar.
