Slim Down this Summer

I just found some new foods that I love but I noticed they’re really high in sodium and I know its supposed to be bad for you. But I’ve researched it and all it says that it increases blood pressure and makes you retain water. I don’t really care if I retain water and I have low blood pressure to begin with (I have a low pulse due to working out a lot). I’m guessing I’m consuming no more than 4,000 mg a day. Should I cut down or am I fine?

P.S. I’m a 22, female

The jury is still out on your question. Lots of studies have been made to determine what if anything happens to people who use more than the RDA of salt (2,400 mg/day in USA, 1,600 mg/day in UK) if they are not sensitve to high sodium intake. It appears from your question that you are one who is not sensitive to high sodium intake. Here’s the deal on sodium. Your body tends to keep a certain level of sodium in its systems. If you take in more than is needed your kidneys extract it, and it is excreted. If you take in less than is needed the kidneys return the sodium to the body. Water is essential in the kidney processes to keep the various minerals including sodium in solution or suspension to maintain efficiency in processing them. Water is also necessary for processing the various other wastes in the blood stream. So people who have sufficient water intake (about 2 qts/day) via fruits, veggies, beverages, etc. and who are not sensitive to high sodium intake don’t seem to have any ill effects. However, it is my opinion that anytime you frequently or continuously tax a system at or near its limits, you reduce the useful life of the system. For example, if you continuously make jack rabbit starts with your car you may only get 100K miles service before the transmission needs repair or the clutch needs replacement. But if you make normal starts then you’ll get 150K+ miles service. Your kidneys are doing work when they remove the unneeded sodium. The higher the amount of sodium it needs to remove, the more work the kidneys must do. My opinion is that you should limit the intake of high sodium foods to occasional treats and insure that sufficient water is consumed with those foods to aid the kidneys in the elimination of the excess.

I agree that it may take time to see improvement… For me walking every day helped tremendously. I went from borderline high to excellent blood pressure very quickly. I also try not to eat a lot of salt.

natural ways to lower blood pressure?

my blood pressure has been running fairly high – I’m recovering from a spinal injury and I have had nerve pain for 4 years. on top of that I lost my job, my mother, my wife and now my dog. I follow a low fat vegan diet. I’m probably about 40 pounds overweight I’d guess. I’m a big muscular guy – I try my best to eat healthy and exercise daily. – things I’ve done natural – apple cider vinegar, vitamins, antioxidants – garlic – celery seed flax oil and I don’t know of anything else that helps. thanks

first let me say i am sorry to hear of the many losses you have experienced in such a short amount of time. you have a lot of stress in your life right now and that is a big cause of the high bp. so i recommend dealing with your anxiety and worry over the stress that has been happening to you. i hope you can take some time to grieve and make sure you go thru all the normal steps of the process. just love yourself and be gentle with yourself right now because this is a very hard time for you.

I have had two seizure occurances in the last year of which I just found out this past week (after testing other stuff for the past year) that I have severe low blood pressure. More specifically my blood pressure will be at the average or just below but then it will drop significantly.
Anyway I need to increase sodium, which isn’t to hard… lots of frozen foods, can foods, etc. BUT my question is when raising sodium are there other nutrients that I need to raise as well in order to balance the high sodium. I was told the average recommendation is 2,400mg a day or less but my doctors want me at at least 5,000mg a day!
Any help is greatly appreciated!
THANKS!!!!!!!

Eat Lean Cuisines they are high in sodium but they are great I had to stop eating them cuz I had tooo high of sodium and it was causing me to have problems so I know how you feel hope it helps.
