Foods That Reduce Stress

Slim Down this Summer

Many healthy foods offer a subtle side-effect- they help relieve stress. Carolyn Snyder is a registered dietitian at Cleveland Clinic. A German study found vitamin C can help reduce stress and return blood pressure to normal levels, so foods like oranges are stress busters. Avocados are packed with potassium, which helps lower blood pressure, and pistachios and walnuts can have the same effect. Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, help keep stress hormones at bay as well. And Snyder says to try some Thanksgiving dinner if you’re feeling stressed. The tryptophan in the turkey is soothing, and sweet potatoes offer benefits too.

I feel really horrible because I don’t eat that well. After getting a check up it was recommended that he change his diet to lower his blood pressure. I know nothing about this. I tried looking online for recipes, but they are for things I would never cook, and for things I don’t have laying around the house.

Does anyone have practical meal ideas that will lower his blood pressure? Preferrably that you fed your husband and it worked?

Thank you!

The basic meal plan for people with high blood pressure should feature foods that lower blood pressure such as legumes and foods high in potassium. For breakfast, include bananas and cereal. Bananas are high in potassium which lowers blood pressure. For lunch, try a large green salad, topped with legumes (lentils), beets and lean meat. Beets also lower blood pressure.
