Atkins Diet: Should kids do low carb?

In this long Quick Hits video, I discuss whether kids or teenagers (as my daughter oft reminds me) should follow the Atkins Diet as prescribed or a more moderate low carb or carb conscious plan.

I respond by saying that for most teenagers a lower carb approach is probably best, especially not if the choice is not driven by the child themselves. I believe as parents we are called to teach our kids a healthy way of eating, and while acknowledging kids’ environment and choices, we should make and help them choose to eat wisely, which by almost any standard should not include “whites” – refined starches and sugars. There should be no requirement for breading or donuts to be healthy or happy. The challenge with kids and teenagers is therefore school lunch programs and their unhealthy nature.

This is by no means a discouragement for teenagers, who may want to try Atkins Diet due to an internal desire to lose weight. I just want them to be aware of what their decision means.

How should i start my atkins diet?

I am going to start atkins diet monday. Should i start it by eating not many carbs sunday or should i eat alot of carbs sunday? Which way will i get better faster results to go into ketosis? ALSO if you know, On average how long does it take for the body to go into ketosis? Also does exercising help get into ketosis faster?

Atkins did not die from this diet—he slipped on black ice while walking to his office, hit his head and died a week later. The radical vegan folks spread that lie a few years back, and it seems to rear its ugly head once in a while.

All your questions are answered in his book, so it sounds like you are trying to do Atkins without reading Atkins. Just get his book and read it, then you will know exactly what to do, and how to do it right. It can be a very successful and healthy diet, but you need more information than just what you think an Atkins diet is.

Atkins Diet Recipes – Low Carb Ice Cream (IF)

In honor of the coming of summer and my jones’ing for ice cream after running the Minneapolis Marathon last weekend (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mI0DA0dkFb8), I wanted to post one of the simplest low carb recipes I have ever come across.

Unlike normal ice cream recipe, which have a lot of air beat into the cream mixture and can double the size, this recipe does not. It is therefore very rich and very good. While it might be listed as a single serving, you very well could share it.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup Heavy Cream
1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract
1 TBS Artificial Sweetener or Liquid Splenda equivalent

Freezing Container
3 cups of ice
6 TBS of Salt

Nutrition Info: (1 serving)
250 Calories, 22g Fat, 3g Carbs, 2g Protein

Atkins Diet: Role of Supplements

This video is in response to a question I received:
“I’ve been very faithful and am over the induction flu, but now I don’t have ANY energy. I slept great last night and I feel like I could lay down right now and take a nap. I’m not skipping meals, I’m taking a multivitamin, and am drinking loads of water. What can I do to get my energy back up?”

My response to her was you are still early into the diet, so your body is still probably adjusting to the new diet. However, if you want to try something immediately, you might a couple supplements that worked for me.

I am going on vacation in two weeks. I want to lose a little weight quickly before I go. I was thinking I would try the Atkins diet but I was worried that when I stopped I would gain all the weight back as soon as I ate a bite of bread. After I stopped doing the Atkins, I would eat a healthy low fat balanced diet. I don’t want to do the Atkins diet for a long time. I worry about fat, cholesterol, and heart disease.

Eating healthy is a lifestyle, not a get thin quick formula…….>

Why is white flower forbidden on the atkins diet?

I am starting induction, the only problem is that the rest of my family is continuing to eat normally and this includes cooking with a good deal of white flour. What is in white flower that causes it to be banned from the Atkins Diet?

It makes you fat, thats why. The more the refined, the worse it is for you. White flour is heavily refined.

Atkins Diet: Hypokalemia — Do you need a banana?

One of my good friends on the Atkins Diet, Izaboutime, talked to me regarding a scare he had. He was following the diet religiously and working out fiendishly in the gym. In that time, he sweated the potassium of his body and put himself into a hypokalemic state. He thought he was having a heart attack. The post script to his tale is he found out what it was and wanted to be sure others knew as well. That was why this video was created.

What is Potassium Good for?
* important for neuron (brain and nerve) functioning
* maintaining osmotic and pH balance – electrolyte
* fluid balance
* heart, kidney and adrenal functions
* preventing muscle contraction
Recommended daily intake of over 4-5,000mg.

Is it a common problem?
Biochemical abnormalities of the ketogenic diet in children.

This study discovered serum levels of sodium, potassium, and calcium were similarly unaltered in humans consuming a ketogenic diet.

What causes a hypokalemia?
* Diuretics, Stimulant Laxatives or Eating Disorders (Bulimia)
* Excessive Sweating / Extreme exercise
* Diarrhea
* Diseases that affect the kidney’s ability to retain potassium (for example, Cushing syndrome)
* Surgical procedures to shorten the intestines where Potassium is absorbed
* Extremely rarely poor diet
In the case of Atkins or most diets, the initial state is diuretic with the loss of glycogen which can temporarily influence electrolyte levels. This is one of the reasons, Dr. Atkins recommends eating potassium rich foods like the ones mentioned in the video, being on guard for leg cramps, and if present, talking with your doctor about a Potassium supplement.

How many kilos/pounds per week can you lose with the Atkins diet, specially the first 3 weeks?

It depends on how much you need to lose, your age, your metabolism, how much you exercise, what foods you eat……
