This video comes out of another myth that gets propagated out by Atkins Diet bashers that somehow we are more likely to get diabetes by following low carb. Certainly there is no shortage of misinformation on the web:

http://www.diabetesuffolk.com/LivingWithDiabetes/The%20Atkins%20diet.htm
Some say we are dangerous for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics. Some just type 1 diabetics, but it really couldn’t be further from the truth. As all people, ESPECIALLY diabetics, could benefit from controlling blood glucose levels by carbohydrate monitoring or restriction.
There are two major proponents for Low Carb for diabetics:
Richard Bernstein, Type 1 Diabetic since 1946

Author of THE DIABETES DIET and Diabetes Solution
Mary Ross Vernon
Chairman of the board, American Society of Bariatric Physicians
Co-Author of Atkins Diabetes Revolution with Robert Atkins

2007 and 2008 Runner Up for Diabetic Educator of the Year Award
Mary Ross Vernon has been controlling diabetes with an Very Low Carb Diet (similar to Atkins Diet) for many years. She says both her Type 1 and Type 2 patients have benefited from carbohydrate restriction. She also notes that seeking quality physicians to handle the dramatic decrease in insulin requirements is paramount as some patients could be medication free in 3 days! See the attached quote (http://rjr10036.typepad.com/askdrvernon/2007/05/ron_of_sarasota.html).
Recently a number of studies have been released to support this position as well. One of the most notable for describing the failure of the existing recommendation of high carb and regulating with increasing doses of insulin is the study released in 2005 Nutrition and Metabolism magazine, “The case for low carbohydrate diets in diabetes management.” (http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1188071&tool=pmcentrez) They detail that the high carbohydrate diet has lead to worse glycemic control, dislipidemia, hypertension, obesity, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). They noted in their review of studies that the low carb followers showed dramatic improvement in comparison to the high carb followers.

Also, only around 4% of their members are actually physicians. Go figure.

In April of this I …
In April of this I was diagnosed with type ll diabetes. I weighed alomost 400lb. I was 28yrs old.
By following Kent’s Advice and sticking to a low carb diet, i’ve dropped 115lb of weight, PLUS by purposely keeping my blood sugars low, it gave my body the chance to increase it’s insulin sensitivity. A few weeks back I asked my Dr for another G.T.T (Glucose test for diabetes). It came back clear. I’m now officially non-diabetic!
D
Thank you so much Kent!
Now that you know …
Now that you know it can be done, I can imagine that is a powerful motivator to return. I was amazed by the reported rapidity than a LC approach can stop some forms of diabetes need for insulin. Just remember why you backslid the first time, and make the plans on how to avoid them this time,
Thanks for comments and hope to many…
Being a diabetic …
Being a diabetic myself, I know that when you lose enough weight, you can lose the metformin/insulin. I’ve done it one time and I’m working to do it again. Hopefully, I won’t backslide this time.
Start posting your …
Start posting your food online at a place like Fitday. You should be losing, so start posting daily meals.
When you hit goal, you should be able to chocolate. It is not a post-Induction during OWL treat.

You are very …
You are very welcome, and I am happy I could provide whatever assistance I could.
I have a family …
I have a family history of Type II Diabetes (insulin-resistance, glucose-intolerance, etc) and became a “low-carber for life” in 2000. I’m convinced that my daughter’s eating disorder and my son’s ADHD as well as my own serious health problems, including GI distress, mood swings, brain fog in the PM, , were the result of 20 years of a low-fat diet.. I think insulin-resistance continues to progress, so I just keep cutting carbs and increasing fat. At 56, I am thin and in excellent health -
The help, advice, …
The help, advice, guidance and support you give is invaluable, and your success is a constant source of inspiration. And my advice to anybody who has weight management issues, or indeed has diabetes, take an hour of your time, go through these videos, take the advice and try it out. It wont work overnight, but, if you stick with it, you will achieve results. you will see consistent weight loss, and your blood sugars will level off, often resulting in a suppression of diabetic symptoms. Good luck
l saw the early …
l saw the early photo’s of you and basically saw myself right there. I was so overweight, it felt like it would never come off, and losing a lb or 2 would make no difference, so there was no point in trying. However, watching somebody drop over 200lb, and to see the drastic results you got, plus, after listening to your video about Atkins and diabetes, I decided id give it a shot, I was so low that I had absolutely nothing to lose. I just wanted to say thank you so much for changing my life. ;oD
That is a fantastic …
That is a fantastic success story. You should definitely tell the people at Atkins NA your story as it is amazing what can be done. I simply can’t believe the cynics still try to insist low carb and Atkins makes people diabetic and not is the powerful sure way to help cure it.
In April this year …
In April this year I was diagnosed a type 2 diabetic and I weighed almost 400lb. I went on Atkins and have followed the induction phase for 3 months straight. I’ve dropped over 100lb and my diabetic symptoms have completely gone. In addition my Dr told me my cholesterol levels have significantly dropped as well.
I owe it all to a low-carb diet.
ive been on atkins …
ive been on atkins for 4 months and dont get migraines anymore at all, previously i used to get 2-3 serious attacks a week …coincidence..i think not…i love atkins,
I moved from Atkins …
I moved from Atkins to a slightly higher carb diet because now I am 100lbs lighter and can tolerate a few more carbs when active. I would have been a type 2 diabetic if not for Atkins.
I think Atkins …
I think Atkins could very much help you get your glucose sensitivity and insulin response back under control. I was definitely destined to by a Type 2 before I changed my lifestyle.

Well said.
I’ve been doing …
I’ve been doing Atkins since 1976. And, I found if anyone suffers from anything hormonally, Atkins will balance all that out by removing all the bad carbs, and extra sugars out of your body..I like to call it my “Sugar Fast” LOL. I tell people I eat only real food and Atkins is fun! It’s not just bacon and eggs, cheese, fat, fat, fat..it’s also berries and veggies and flavor in your food.
And, HEALTHY. Atkin’s is one of my heros, and I miss him.
Thanks bowulf for your passion, you encourage us.
Thanks for your …
Thanks for your insight. Keep up the videos. They are a great service. God Bless!!
I have seen lots of …
I have seen lots of reports that people feel better mentally on the Atkins Diet as a lot of the roller coaster of hormones seem to settle down. Certainly some of it is due to seeing success on their diet, but I think it goes further than too as people start to eliminate the junk and processed foods from their diet. I won’t say Atkins cures Depression, but it certainly doesn’t hurt past the can be traumatic Induction flu period.
Hi Kent,
I just …
Hi Kent,
I just wanted to thank you for sharing your story as well as providing all these educational videos. I have been on Atkins for 4 days now and am doing well. Is the Atkins diet good if you suffer from Depression and anxiety? Thanks again so much.
