Atkins Diet: Induction Flu: Signs of Progress or Problems
It is very common that I read questions or statements from new Atkineers saying, “How come I feel so tired?” “Why do I have such a headache?” “I have no energy what is this diet doing to me!” One of the problems is no one forewarned them about Induction flu. Induction flu is simply the body burning its last remaining glucose and stored glycogen for energy, and suffering withdrawal effects. It is very similar to what happens when runners “hit the wall” and cyclist “bonk.” In addition to the physical withdrawal symptoms there are the mental symptoms as well. Think of drug addict, are they necessarily pleasant to be around or in high spirits even though they are doing something good. Well the carb addict has the same reaction; I personally was irritable for the first 2 or 3 weeks as I had to figure out how to eat, exert control over what entered my mouth, and regain new comfort foods. It is a dramatic change, and some people resist change.
The good news is it is just temporary. It typically only last a few days, but for some the mental effects might last longer. It also shows you are on the right path and making true progress on getting rid of the excess fat. The silver lining is indeed that by the end if you continue the follow the plan you will be burning fat for fuel.
You’ll have to watch the video for my suggestions on how to lessen the effects.

Induction always …
Induction always causes severe fatigue and headaches because the body is using toxic stored fat as its energy source, drink at least 80 oz of pure water a day, take aspirin as needed, and drink hot lemon water before retiring at night.
And don’t forget the Metamucil for fiber.
Good Luck!

Gave up Lipitor, …
Gave up Lipitor, started on Atkins didn’t go for blood test for 3 weeks. In three weeks my cholesterol dropped from 9.3 to 5.5. Not only that, I had constant migrane previously and ate like 8 panadols a day, well that migraine dissapeared too. My liver went back to normal. This was in 3 weeks. In 3 months i lost 8 kilos (I was only 53 kg so it’s not like i had to lose weight) but i looked toned after that. So seriously i don’t know what you did wrong.
i disagree with you …
i disagree with you, I was 37 when i had a heart attack like symptom and taken to hospital, checks showed i had extremely high cholesterol…9.3 I had fatty liver as well. Went on Lipitor (40mg a day) and i had to do a blood test every week…that didn’t work, no improvement for a year..and then a colleague recommended Atkins. I had nothing to lose.
As for no energy, I …
As for no energy, I have ran 30-50 miles every week, lifted weights, and ran multiple marathons and half marathons while doing Atkins. I have had no problem with energy past the initial Induction flu.
So the real question is – what did you do? How much water were you were drinking? Did you have a food log posted somewhere? I’d love to see what you did that you didn’t achieve the same success or freedom from problems that thousands others have.
Then again if you want spout myths, I doubt it.
Wow where to start …
Wow where to start on all this misinformation:
* Where do you get that it eats muscles? Which study? As most studies I have read by Eric Westman and Dr Volek shows that the diet preserves muscle mass, and I question how a diet rich in protein and fats and not extreme low Calorie would “eat your muscles.”
As for cholesterol sky-rocketing, how do you account for the studies and my own example that shows Atkins DECREASES cholesterol? My own dropped 50 points!!
Kidney stones-Check out my video!
do you know atkins …
do you know atkins eats your muscles?you loose muscle mass on top of water.you think its all fat but its not, your colestrol sky rockets due to all the meat you eat.atkins causes kidney stones and ghout.i know all about it ive been on atkins twice and it about killed my health even tho i lost weight.i was always tired had no energy got kidney stones had to get off it.second round got gout.people who loose alot of weight have no muscle tone.its not a healty diet, and u never have energy

I have just started …
I have just started the Atkins Diet yesterday and I thought my pounding headache had something to do with it! Thanks for clarifying that for me. Though the headache hasn’t deterred me it is just a constant annoyance, I know it is only temporary and it’s a rite of passage so to speak!
Soy products are …
Soy products are allowed in Induction, but certainly count the carbs and get the unsweetened products.

No oats on the Induction period – not on the Acceptable Foods List… The light-headedness could be from lack of water. Are you eating your three cups of vegetables per day?
As for ketone stix, I have found them readily at Wal-mart and almost any drug store.

That level is fine. …
That level is fine. The level of ketacidosis (as opposed to ketosis) that isn’t fine is about 10-100x more ketones that. There are no dangerous levels of ketosis for the non-diabetic.
LDL and total cholesterol typically drops while on this diet. HDL typically increases as well, which makes the drop to LDL more impressive. Mine for instance dropped by over 50 points.
Yes, you should be eating all the meats, cheese, eggs as well as your three cups of veggies too.
Hey, I haven’t been …
Hey, I haven’t been on here in a while. I just got into ketosis. I had a few questions.
1. My ketone dip stick is medium purple which indicates large. Are those the levels I should be in in induction, are they safe?
2. How does the diet affect LDL because my LDL was a bit high before starting. Can I keep eating all these eggs, cheese, meats etc.? Does Ketosis burn LDL cholesterol as well as fat?

If you check out my exercise videos, you will see multiple links in there to the above Dr. Phinney work and other studies. If you check out my misconception series video especially the water weight video, you will see links to studies to Dr. Eric Westman study that demonstrated low carb was protective of lean body mass. The links are in the appropriate videos.
Multiple studies linked and referenced have shown performance has remained the same, and the Diet actually protective of muscle tissue.

Hey, found your site by accident doing a search on Yahoo but I’ll definitely be returning. As for your post… I agree with a lot of what you’ve said here but wouldn’t it be just as easy to try something else? I mean why screw with your quality of life if you don’t have to?
I ended up doing the cleanse for 20 days (my goal was to go until my tongue turned pink), and I went through many ups and downs and periods of wanting to quit. But I finished, I and will use this tool periodically for the rest of my life. My energy was amazing (I planted a garden and repainted my kitchen, by myself!), and the satisfaction I had when I was done, from being able to see it through to the end, was more than I can explain. Anyone who wants to take control of their health truly should try this fast. It is amazing, and you will learn much about yourself.
great posts. Mind Telling how you get the ideas for your posts. What more special to be posted.
Howdy, your site is on air in the radio! Good job mate. Your posts are truly great and bookmarked. Regards
Awesome article post. Thanks Again. Really Great.
I’ve been trying to lose weight for years. Actually I have over and over again. It gets old.
I’m going to try another diet plan, but I’m not sure which one. Have any of you tried the Every Other Day Diet or the Diet Solution Program? If so, how did it work for you?
Thank you for the advice. I found your first point to be most informative.
Excelente material.
Your blog is so informative … keep up the good work!!!!
If only you had the resources to expand your speed, sometimes your webpage doesn’t load quick.
I hadn’t noticed a problem, thanks for bringing it to my attention. Which browser were you using?
Thanks for your article. A lot of people who are struggling to lose weight, including myself will surely benefit from this.

I’d say if you’re looking to lose weight avoid Gatorade. It messes up your Thyroid due to the Bromide in it. The High Fructose COrn Syrup prevents weight loss too….
